As parents, there’s nothing harder than seeing your child struggle to breathe easily. Whether it’s a persistent cough, recurring colds, flare-ups of asthma, or eczema, these issues can make everyday life more difficult — not just for your child, but for the whole family.
At Edinburgh Salt Rooms, we offer a gentle and natural way to support children’s respiratory and skin health. Salt therapy is safe and calming. It's designed to work in harmony with your child’s body, helping them breathe easier and feel more at ease.
Why Children Are More Vulnerable
Children breathe faster than adults. Their lungs are still developing. Their immune systems are more sensitive. And they spend a lot of time playing close to the ground right where dust, mould, pet dander and pollen tend to linger. Add school germs, city air, and allergy triggers into the mix, and it’s no surprise that many little ones pick up every cold going around.
Salt therapy offers a way to strengthen the respiratory system. It helps the body clear irritants more efficiently. Salt is not a cure, but it can make a noticeable difference to how your child feels day to day.
How Salt Therapy Works for Children
In each session, dry pharmaceutical-grade salt is gently released into the air. As your child breathes, the salt particles travel deep into the lungs, helping to:
Loosen mucus and clear the airways
Ease coughing and congestion
Calm inflammation and reduce sensitivity
Fight bacteria and allergens naturally
Strengthen the immune response over time
Support clearer breathing and better sleep
Children often respond even faster than adults. Their smaller bodies and developing systems seem to welcome the reset.
What Can Salt Therapy Help With?
Our younger visitors come to the salt room for all sorts of reasons, but most often it's to ease symptoms linked to:
Asthma
Eczema
Hay fever
Recurrent ear, nose and throat infections
Bronchiolitis
Long COVID or post-viral recovery
General immune support
You don’t need a referral and sessions are suitable for most children from 6 months upwards. Babies must be accompanied by an adult, and our Family Room is designed to be warm, quiet and playful enough for everyone to feel at ease.
Is Salt Therapy Safe for Children?
Yes. Salt therapy is non-invasive and medication-free. It’s recognised by the Salt Therapy Association as safe for children and can be used alongside your existing treatment plan.
There’s no mess, no discomfort, and no need for your child to sit still or stay quiet. Many of our little clients bring toys, read books or nap during the session.
Some parents notice improvement after just a few visits. For longer-term relief, we usually suggest starting with 10 to 15 sessions depending on your child’s needs.
Breathe Easier as a Family
Every child deserves to feel free in their own body. At Edinburgh Salt Rooms, we’re here to make that a little easier. If you’d like to learn more or book a session in our dedicated Family Room, click here or call us for a friendly chat.
Because when your child breathes better, everything feels a little lighter.
